Good morning, teachers and fellow students.
Let me start with a question: Do you think Texas Hold’em is just gambling?
I do not encourage gambling. What I want to share today are a few life lessons I learned from playing this strategy game — about decisions, emotions, risks, and most importantly, letting go of anxiety.
One: process over outcome.
In poker, a good decision can lose, and a bad decision can win. That’s called variance. Have you ever aced a guess-work exam? Or studied hard but failed?
Poker taught me: never judge a decision by its short-term result. Do the right thing consistently, and don’t let one bad outcome make you doubt your method.
The result is just feedback, not your identity.
Think about it: a single exam doesn’t define you. Neither does a single hand.
Two: control your emotions.
After a few bad hands, some players “tilt” — they get angry, play recklessly. Sound familiar? Like when you bomb a test and want to give up?
The best players stay calm. They don’t show frustration. They accept the loss and move on. That’s a superpower — in poker, and in life.
Next hand, next chance. Same goes for a bad grade — next test, next topic.
So next time you feel like exploding, just breathe. One bad hand is not the end.
Three: manage risk, don’t run from it.
You don’t play every hand. You fold when the odds are against you. Learning is the same. Say “no” to things that drain you. Save your energy for the right opportunities.
You don’t have to win every battle — just the important ones.
Ask yourself: what’s worth your chips today? Your time is your most valuable stack.
Four: the long game wins.
Luck matters in one hand. Skill matters over a thousand hands. Short-term anxiety? It’s just noise. If you keep learning, keep reflecting, probability will eventually reward you.
Don’t let a bad result ruin a good decision.And a lucky guess doesn’t make you a genius.
